Techiman Records 1,342 Teenage Pregnancies In 2014

The Techiman Municipality in the Brong Ahafo Region recorded 1,342 teenage pregnancies in 2014.

The Municipal Public Health Nurse, Madam Diana Asigri, revealed this at a workshop on reproductive health in Techiman organised by DKT International Ghana.

She said the municipality recorded 1,351 teenage pregnancies in 2012; 1,300 in 2013; and 1,342 in 2014.

The pregnant girls were between the ages of 10 and 19.

According to her, teenage pregnancy is becoming a phenomenon in the municipality and needs urgent attention to reduce the menace.

Madam Asigri revealed that despite the collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) in educating the young people, more girls are getting pregnant.

She called on parents to support teachers in educating young girls not to engage in pre-marital sex.

She called on the parents to provide the needs of these young girls, which, she noted, would reduce the incidence of teenage pregnancy.

The queen-mother of Mesidan in the Techiman Municipality, Nana Faah Adomako, speaking at the programme, said puberty rites should be re-introduced in the municipality to help reduce the high pregnancy rate in the area.

She called on the girls to abstain from pre-marital sex to prevent them from contracting Sexually Transmitted Diseases and also getting pregnant, which would affect their education.
