Sports Ministry Again!

The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) is in the news again. This time it is about the Sports Development Officer, James Armah. Mr Armah has been arrested by the police for allegedly collecting GH4,000 from each of 12 able-bodied persons he assisted to participate in a sports tournament for the deaf and dumb held in Australia last month. The 12 feigned deaf and dumb and participated in the games but disappeared soon after the tournament. Briefing the media in Accra yesterday, Wednesday, August 5, 2009, on the issue, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Frank Adu-Poku, said last month, an international sports festival was organised in Australia for the deaf and dumb. Mr. Adu-Poku said even though the passports of some deaf and dumb were collected to be processed for the said trip, Mr Armah substituted them with those of able-bodied persons with which they traveled to Australia for the tournament. He said, even after the tournament, the official of the Ministry who accompanied the team and the coach returned home but members of the team had not. DCOP Adu-Poku said Armah was assisting the police in their investigations after which he would be put before court. He said his outfit was collaborating with other international security agencies such as the International Police Organisation to arrest the absconding team members.
