Mr. James Agalga, the Deputy Minister of the Interior, has observed that the security situation in Bimbilla in the Nanumba North District was still very tensed, and appealed to the people to allow peace to prevail.
He said until the factions in the recent disputes relaxed on their entrenched positions for the sake of peace, Government would remain adamant at reviewing the curfew hours from the current 16 hrs GMT to 06 hrs GMT, saying, “We will continue to monitor the security situation in Bimbilla, to determine whether to review the curfew hours or not”.
Mr Agalga was briefing the media in Bimbilla on Tuesday after separate closed door meetings with the regent of Nanum Traditional Area, Yelinbongu Lana Abdulai Andani and his elders, as well as members of the Butchers Associations.
The minister who was on an official tour of the area to assess the security situation, was accompanied by Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru, Northern Regional Minister, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Ken Yeboah, Northern Regional Police Commander, and other security commanders in the region.
Mr Agalga said the butchers were refusing to withdraw from their entrenched positions culminating in the Regional Security Committee issuing a directive after the meeting to be enforced by the District Security Committee for all individuals to sign bonds before being allowed to operate as butchers at the abattoir.
He warned the security not to allow any butcher to enter the abattoir, unless such a butcher had signed the undertaking, stressing that everybody must be law-abiding and respect the authorities in their jurisdiction.
Alhaji Mohammed-Muniru urged the people to ensure that the limited peace that was being enjoyed in the area was sustained and improved upon, for development to return to the area.
He said government was not interested in mingling in chieftaincy issues, but was concerned about the security needs of the people, and would do everything possible as a responsible government to protect the lives of the citizenry.
Later, the delegation met the security personnel sent to the area to maintain law and order, and commended them for the service they were rendering to the nation.
The delegation urged them to be extra vigilant, and arrest any disobedient person who wanted to foment trouble.
