Ghana’s leading IT and telecommunications solutions provider, Subah Infosolutions Limited, has stated its resolve to curb the Sim-Box Fraud through its partnership with the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the telecommunications service providers.
Sim-Box fraud has become rampant and difficult to tackle in the country in recent times and its operators are causing the government of Ghana to lose millions of dollars in revenues which could have been channelled in developing key areas of the economy.
Addressing a technology conference at the Africa Mobile and ICT Expo 2015 event, at the Accra International conference Centre yesterday, Managing Director of Subah- Infosolutions Limited, Mr. Biredra Sasmal, revealed some of the causes of Sim-Box Fraud and the efforts his outfit was making in trying to tackle the menace so as to prevent further damage to government coffers.
“The cost [19 cents] of incoming international calls from foreign countries is a major cause of the sim-box fraud in the country. Some operators abroad see it too expensive and they are not ready to pay. So they think that if they by-pass the calls, they are not going to pay and that is why they get involved in it,” he said.
He added: “There are other elements also that lead to Sim-Box fraud; some people go into the business, simply because they want to make a living.”
Subah InfoSolutions Limited, since the start of its operations in Ghana, has been providing technical expertise to the Ghana Police CID, the Telecommunication service providers and the NCA in their quest to bring an end to Sim-Box Fraud in the country.
“In trying to eliminate Sim-Box Fraud, we [Subah Info Solutions Limited] have created pop-ups, a system that helps us in generating call data from different countries. We have 140 locations at the moment where we pop-up the calls and with that we are able to detect the illegal ones from the system,” Mr. Birendra disclosed.
“We give the detected illegal calls to the NCA, who then gives them to telcos to block those numbers,” he pointed out.
The Subah boss also urged NCA; the Telecommunications service providers and all stakeholders in the communications industry to device a preventive mechanism which can also help in the fight against sim-box fraud.
The general public was also advised to report any suspected sim-box fraud activity in order to prevent further loss of income by government through that illegal operation.
