Western Union Celebrates 20th Anniversary In Africa

The Western Union Company, a leader in global payment services, has celebrated its 20th anniversary in Africa
With over 34,000 locations in more than 50 countries and territories, Western Region network serves more than 17 million senders and receivers with a choice of 120 currencies.

Currently the company has 155 operators in Africa and still counting.

To celebrate this milestone, Western Union’s President for Africa, Middle East , Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe and CIS , Jean Claude in addition to the Africa leadership team visited the first agents location at ADB (Agric Development Bank) that offered Western Union money transfer services for the first time in Africa in 1995.

Senior management from both Western and ADB expressed the importance of their collaboration over the past 20 years as they provide fast, reliable and convenient options for money transfer.

Western union team also visited Ecobank head office in Accra and marked the occasion with the launch of the Account Based Money Transfer services through ATM in Ghana.

The President, Western Union, Jean Claude Farah answering questions relating to money laundering, showered praises on government putting in measures to fight money laundering and terrorist operation in the banking industry.

Touching on contribution of social responsibilities given to Africans, Jean Claude Farah disclosed that the network has so far spent about 100 million dollars globally with approximately 9 million dollars in Africa for the past 10 years.

Wrapping his remarks of the 20th anniversary with the Press, Jean Claude Farah stated that, no company can thrive in business in Africa if it does not realize the challenges of Africa as a continent.
