Mrs Matilda Amissah-Arthur, the Second Lady, has urged Ghanaians to show compassion to the poor and vulnerable in society.

She said the issue of quality health delivery was important for the socio-economic development of the country.


Mrs Amissah-Arthur made the call when she presented hospital equipment, including wheel chairs, clutches, sterilizers and drip stand among others, to the Danbai Health Centre in the Krachi East District of the Volta Region.


The donation to the health centre formed part of her advocacy to support deprived communities with hospital equipment and reading materials.


Mrs Amissah-Arthur commended the health personnel at the Health Centre for their dedication to work, despite the inadequate resources.


“We appreciate everything that you do, we may not say it well enough, we know you are working with limited resources, and that is why we appreciate you the more,” she added.


Dr Joseph Teye Nuertey, Volta Regional Health Director, who received the items on behalf of the Health Centre, stated that the government had a policy to ensure that every district was provided with a hospital.


He said the Krachi East District was one of the districts in the region which did not have a district hospital of its own.


He said Regional Health Directorate had recommended to the Ministry of Health to add to the infrastructure plan a district hospital for the Krachi East District which had been accepted.


Dr Teye Nuertey appealed to chiefs in the area to provide land for the construction of the hospital.


He said the nearest hospital to Danbai for referrals in-terms of emergency cases was in Worawora, which was about 60km away, adding that, to serve a population of 134,000 people without a district hospital, was not the best thing to do.


He urged the Second Lady to add her voice to the call for the Krachi East District to have its own hospital, to serve the health needs of the people.


Mrs Helen Adjoa Ntoso, Volta Regional Minister, lauded Mrs Amissah-Arthur, for coming to support the Danbai Health Centre at the right time, since the medical equipment would help to improve health delivery at the centre.


She announced that the government was undertaking a lot of development projects in the region, and that she supported the call for the Krachi East to be given a district hospital to expand health delivery in the area.


Additionally, the Second Lady had made a similar donation of health equipment to the Borae Health Centre at Borae in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the region.
