NPP Lobbies Smaller Parties For New Voters Register

In a bid to build its case for the current voters register to be reviewed, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is lobbying for support from the other political parties. The NPP has, on several occasions, called the credibility of the current voters register into question, describing it as bloated and has constantly pushed for a review. The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo appealed to the new Chairperson of the Electoral Commissioner (EC) to give Ghana a fresh start by creating a new voters register. A political pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance has already announced plans to embark on a series of actions aimed at forcing the electoral commission to come out with a new voters register for the 2016 election. Officials from the NPP have already met with the Peoples National Convention (PNC) and has planned to meet the leaders of the other parties as well over the matter. The National Democratic Congress (NDC), however has brushed aside the concerns from the NPP about the voters register. The General Secretary of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, said at a press conference in January that the complaints from the NPP are unjustifiable, adding that the voters register is the most credible since independence Since independence this has been the most accurate register, no register can be claimed to be perfect because in statistics, there is always some margin of error, but as far as we are concerned this has been the most accurate register for any election in Ghana. At least this biometric technology is the latest technology that deals with the accuracy of compilation of any human data anywhere, he insisted Last Saturday, the National First Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Ofosu Ampofo described the NPPs call for an audit of the new voter register as absurd.
