Allotey Jacobs Warns Of Fishermen Revolt Against Gov't

The Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is warning of a revolt by fishermen against the government if the old landing beach committees are not replaced. According to Bernard Allotey Jacobs, the promises made to fishermen ahead of the 2012 elections have not been met largely because of corrupt activities by members of the landing beach committee and their co-conspirators in government. Speaking to Joy News, the regional NDC chair said to bring the fishermen on their side, a promise was made to make pre-mix fuel available to them at all times and at cheaper prices but that has not been achieved. "There is fighting at Nyanyano. Fierce fighting. The landing beach committees are doing what they like. "I have done my best to ensure that peace prevails at the fishing communities. To keep the fishermen on our side we made a promise that when we come we will make sure there is frequent supply of premix at very modest prices. "Today it is a different thing. Sometimes they will smuggle the pre-mix fuel and outboard motors to Cote D'Ivoire," Allotey Jacobs alleged. His allegations follow some confusion that broke out yesterday in Anomabo over the distribution of pre-mix fuel to fishermen. Richard Kwadwo Nyarko said misunderstanding as to who will distribute the premix fuel led to the fighting. Police personnel had to intervene to bring law and order. Reacting to the allegations by Allotey Jacobs, the Chief Fisherman for Moree and Chairman of the Landing Beach Committee there, Nana Kweigya VII said the allegations are baseless.
