Doctors Strike Saga: Patients Still Troop To KATH

Management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi in the Ashanti region, is under intense pressure as patients still continue to visit the hospital though doctors are hanging on to their strike.

Today’s checks at KATH since Ghana Medical Association (GMA) embarked on strike last week showed that persons in need of medical assistance have not ceased showing their faces at the hospital but only for them to walk away with disappointment.

Today gathered that management of the state health institution holds meetings daily to see how best to help the patients.

But unfortunately, this paper learnt that there has been no fruitful outcome.

Today further observed that it was more disturbing on Monday, August 3, 2015 when some patients who had travelled from far and near who were on medical appointments became stranded as they learnt on arrival that doctors were on indefinite strike over their service conditions negotiations with government.

A man from Brofoyedu-Adumasa whose child was referred to the hospital for surgery arrived only to meet the absence of doctors that day.

He told Today in an interview, “I arrived here early this morning; it is now close to 9:00 A.M., but nobody is here to assist me. The only thing I can do is to pray and wait for the return of these doctors as my child’s case is not an emergency.”

According to him, he earlier went to a private health centre and was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital but was “never aware of the strike.”

But Today understands that there will be more hectic time for the management of the hospital as GMA has announced denying emergency services to the general public from next week Thursday.

However, a source at KATH told this reporter that the authorities at the hospital intend to keep the Accident and Emergency Unit open to the public although doctors will be absent.
