BNI To Return Passport

The Human Right Division of the High Court in Accra has asked the Bureau of national Investigation (BNI) to release the passport of the former Foreign Minister, Akwasi Osei Agyei to him. The court, presided over by Justice Paul Dery after listening to arguments from both sides ruled that the BNI should not hold the passport of the former Foreign Minister. According to Mr Dery, the BNI after taking possession of the passport of Osei Adjei failed to prefer charges against him and the 48 hour requirement elapsed. Mr Osei Adjei sued the BNI for taking possession of his passport against his fundamental Human Right which is enshrined in the 1992 constitution. Mr Osei Adjei is facing charges for his involvement in the importation of rice from India by the Ghanaian Government in 2008. Counsel for Mr Osei Adjei, Mr. Godfred Odame told Peace FM that, all three reliefs sought by the plaintiff were granted by the court. The applicants sought an unconditional release of the passport and an order restraining the Attorney-General and BNI from curtailing the right to freedom of movement of the plaintiff, counsel said. He described the ruling as a victory for the countrys democracy and the deepening of the rule of law. Supporters of the former Foreign Minister who thronged the court premises, wielded placards some of which read, we believe in the courts, we want fairness.
