Count Down:The Akwatia Election

Check the calendar; we have only three more days to the Akwatia Elections in the six polling stations. But I can almost hear sighs of relief from the majority of Ghanaians as this election comes down the final stretch in the area. Though campaign is still going on, the kind of that characterized the elections last year is significantly minimal this time round. Even the political junkies who love the intrigue, the money, the battle of ideas, the strategy and the urgency surrounding the electoral process appear relatively quiet. Could it be that they are waiting for the actual voting day? Or is the attention being switched to Hon. Asamoah Boatengs case with the BNI? May be the NPP has relaxed because the members believe its a done deal since their candidate Dr. Kofi Asare is leading by over 3,000 votes. What about the NDC candidate Hon. Baba Jamal? Is he relaxed because he has already been given an executive position as deputy minister? Apart from the police who has been updating Peace FM on their progress in maintaining peace in the area, the electoral commission (EC) after announcing the date August 18, 2009 for the re-run, has not been coming out frequently to educate the Public on certain things toward the elections as was done previously. It would be recalled that last month the EC fixed Tuesday August 18, 2009 to re-run the disputed parliamentary elections in six (6) polling stations in the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Following court order. The EC could not declare the winner for the Akwatia Parliamentary seat due to alleged electoral irregularities leading to the filing of a joint writ by Baba Jamal, NDC candidate and two independent candidates, Mr. Samuel Abrokwah and Basil Ahiable, praying the court to order the EC to conduct fresh parliamentary elections. The six polling stations, are Presby High School, Yoruba Mosque A, Yoruba Mosque B, Lorry Station A, Lorry Station B and AMB Zion Church.
