Attempt by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to convince many especially, the Electoral Commission (EC), led by the newly appointed Mrs. Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei, to compulsorily compile another expensive voter register for next year’s parliamentary and presidential elections, has been shot down by a member of the party insisting, it is a defeatist approach.

A former aide to ex-National Chairman of the party, Jake Obetsibi Lamptey, argues that the desperate attempt by his party to have the EC to re-register voters for next year’s general elections means, the NPP is indirectly giving, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), a blank cheque to win the 2016 elections.

Mr. Baah Acheamfour, asked the leadership of his party to rather vigorously work on winning the hearts and minds of the voters with marketable messages and programmes.

Mr. Achamfour’s advice comes on the heels of the party’s press conference held yesterday at the expensive Alisa Hotel in Accra to state among others, wild allegations about the voter register used in the 2012 general elections, which saw the NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo, trailing the NDC’s John
Dramani Mahama by over 300,000 votes.
In that meeting at Alisa Hotel on Tuesday, the 2012 vice presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, said “The evidence that we have is damning and shows that Ghana’s voters register, has been compromised,”

He continued “what is more troubling is the fact that most of the pictures on the register were scanned unto the cards. These pictures do not represent real registers. It is not a document we can rely on for free, fair elections. This is just a sample; it is quite a lot as you will see;
and it is quite amazing, it is quite amazing,”.

But Mr. Acheamfour is not impressed with the party’s so-called smoking gun findings, pointing out it was the same NPP under the leadership of ex-president, John Agyekum Kufuor, that the dual citizen bill was passed into law, to enable Ghanaians leaving outside to vote and take part in other national events.

He questioned what was strange about Ghanaians living in neighboring countries to register and vote here in Ghana, going by the Dual Citizen law, passed under ex-President Kufuor.

The Communications Director for “Save NPP Now” also questioned the likes of General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, National Chairman, Paul Afoko, Nana Addo, and others who are described as leading members, if they were prepared to make themselves available at Ghana’s borders to screen who indeed, is a Ghanaian or not?

Using the keenly contested 2012 elections, Mr. Acheamfour said, the NPP, always wants to do the same thing every day, but wants different result afterwards. He recalled how the party ahead of the 2012 election, insisted on a new biometric register, first of its kind in Ghana’s history, and made its point clear that, it was the surest way to have a credible election.

According to him, after the back and forth with the NDC, the wish of the NPP was granted, only to go into that elections and end up in the Supreme Court, spending eight good months fruitlessly claiming it had been cheated.

He advised the NPP to shun the blame game, and look within, by working on it campaign messages, to win the minds and hearts of the electorates.

In his view, if the NPP, keep insisting that the president is corrupt or is a non-performer, the NPP, should be able to justify why it holds that view, instead of focusing all it attention on a voter register.

According to him, the NPP often times go into elections ill-prepared, but when they are defeated, then they turn their anger on especially the EC, who until recently, was headed by Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, who they ended up branding as a demon before his retirement a few months ago.

The NPP he said, has been pampered for far too long, which needs to be told the truth, however, bitter it may taste.
Meanwhile, others have also diagnosed that one of the party’s recent challenge, has been it twice defeated flagbearer, who is contesting his last elections in 2016.

According to them, the hard truth is that, the 71-year-old Nana Addo, is unattractive to most voters, reason the president had to use only three months to campaign to floor him, after he campaigned for years.

Meanwhile, ahead of the much publicized press conference, the Convention People’s Party’s (CPP) director of elections, James Kwabena Bonfer, disagreed with the NPP on it campaign to get a new register for Ghana.

Speaking to Kasapa FM’s Fiifi Banson on Monday, the former Youth Organizer of the CPP, popularly called Kabilla said; he was yet to be convinced by anyone especially, the NPP that the EC needed to compile a new register.

General Secretary, Bernard Morna of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), has also rejected the call for a fresh Voter register.
