Akwatia Clash: Five Month Old Baby a Victim

Innocent children under the ages of eighteen years including a five-month old baby, were yesterday, August, 16, 2009 caught in the violence that took place in the Akwatia Township. The five month old baby was reported to have suffered from tear-gas suffocation as the police, attempted to bring the violence under control. According to our reporter, Obeng Manu, everyone present thought the child had died but fortunately the health personnel did their best to keep him alive. Apart from the innocent children who suffered, some political personalities themselves also felt the violence. The National General-Secretary of the NPP, Nana Ntow bled profusely from injuries inflicted on him by a group of youth suspected to be NDC supporters. Aside him, another NPP activist, identified as Kwesi Korang, was also stabbed at the back of his neck following violence in the re-run to the elections to be held in six polling stations in the area, tomorrow August 18, 2009. In view of this, some political party faithfuls have alleged that the elections be postponed, but the Deputy Eastern Regional Chairman of the Electoral Commission (CEO) dismissed the allegations, saying the EC had not taken such a decision. Speaking on Peace FMs Morning Show, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Hon. Baba Jamal and that of the NPP, Dr. Kofi Asare, blamed each other for the violence. According to Dr Asare, Hon Baba Jamal had already declared the election as a Jihad meaning: Holy War, so he (Baba Jamal) was now acting accordingly. Meanwhile, reports from our correspondent, Obeng Darko, say the situation today is calm and people are going about their daily chores in peace.
