The rising movie star, Vicky Zugah is not excited about how some critics find fault with local movies.
She said derogatory remarks by some critics tend to discourage producers and directors, whose efforts are aimed at meeting the target of local viewers.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with BEATWAVES on Thursday, Vicky said most critics just criticize local movies based on their own prejudices, without providing solutions to the problem.
According to her, some people just have distasteful dislike for movies in local dialects.
Every local (Twi) movie now, Vicky said, is seen by the so-called elite group especially, as movies that are not worth watching. �But that is very wrong,� she said, explaining that local Twi movies have bigger markets locally than the Ghanaian English movies.
�It is about time we became proud of our local language movies. Good things do come out of these movies; but some people have already made up their minds that because these movies are local, definitely the story-line is �yak� or not interesting.
No! This is the time for us to educate ourselves to help build a better industry,� she said.
The actress, who is also a presenter and part-time producer on Skyy TV, said, �In every industry, there are bad nuts but there are good ones too.
There are still good Twi movies out there just as there are there bad ones. Let us not judge the local movies, solely by the bad movies we see. Why don�t we look at the good ones and encourage those who are not doing well enough to back up?
�Let�s not criticize without correcting. We criticize producers, let us do as much as possible to correct and I am sure they will listen.�
Vicky is not the type that says no to Twi movie roles. She had at least starred in three of such movies alongside Agya Koo.
Some of these movies are �Raise the Flag�, �School Teacher� and �One Day Billionaire�, with her fourth with �Katayere� still in the making. The former student of the West African Secondary School, Excel School of Cosmetology and Toronto Pictures Film Academy had a stint with the movie industry in 2005 with her first role in Venus Films� �Mummies Daughter.�
She was a make-up artiste for Venus but when a lady actress failed to show up for her role, Abdul Salam decided to try Vicky and she did not disappoint him. She now has a lot of movies to her credit.
�Hey, I lost count but I have done �My Dearest Princess�, �Return of Beyonce�, �Cross My Heart�, �The Bible�, �Total Exchange�, �Bloody Kids� among others,� she said.
