MP Assures Nation...Says Ghana Is Well Equipped To Counter Religious Extremists, ISIS

After the shocking news that a 25-year old graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of the Science and Technology, (KNUST) has been recruited into the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) which is spreading its tentacles to West Africa, Ghanaians have nothing to fear, as the security services are well equipped to counter any religious extremism to protect its citizenry.

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South Constituency and Chairman for parliamentary Select Committee on interior and Defence, Hon. Frederick Fritz Baffour, told The Enquirer in an interview yesterday.

According to him, though the news of about recruitment of Nazir Nortei Alema, the KNUST, by ISIS, came as shock to many, to him, there was no need for fear and panic because the security services in Ghana are underground on anti-terrorists activities which will be a sure guard against the ISIS and its allies.

Even though Hon. Baffour would not reveal the counter-terrorism strategies, he told the paper Ghana would be able to withstand their attacks.

He said he has no reason to doubt the preparedness and capacity of the security services to counter such activities.

While assuring that, the security were ever ready for any eventuality, Mr. Baffour said on his personal point of view, Nazir Nortie Alema’s recruitment into ISIS after graduating was no surprise to him, because it is a long overdue hope for the youth.

He said Nazir’s action could not be attributed to anything rate of unemployment among graduates in the country, adding that not every graduate would be willing to go through hardship in order to get employment.

The Ablekuma South MP also blamed the situation on the current system of the national service, stating that “The continued posting of graduates to fields to do national service contributed largely to the large unemployment rate in the country.”

He therefore called for a restructured system in the national service where graduates are posted to the area of the their fieds ofs tudy,s tressing that even if they are unable to get employed after the service, they could have learnt something to start on their own.

He further told the paper that, the culture of graduate’s refusing posting to remote areas had also contributed to some extent the level of unemployment in the country and therefore called for attitudinal change among graduates and the youth in general.

The Daily Guide on Tuesday this week broke the story about, Nazir’s successfully recruitment into ISIS, a notorious terrorist group.

Nazir’s association with ISIS came to be known when he said to have sent a message via to have sent a message via Whatsapp to a relative indicating whereabouts of him and his mission.

His own father, Abdul Latif Alema, according to the paper, revealed Nazir’s association with ISIS.

It has also been reported that, a certain Badharn Diallo, a Guinean, who attended the University of Ghana, Legon, and joined the ISIS five mots ago, is the brain behind the recruitment of the young Ghanaian Muslims.

The Enquirer has also picked information that the National Security, as well as the Ghana Armed Forces, is leaving stone unturned to trace the root of Nazir and his pals’ ISIS recruitment agents.
