MTN FA Cup Final: Kotoko 1 - 2 Medeama: Medeama Lift 2015 MTN FA Cup Trophy

Kumasi Asante Kotoko failed to avenge their 2013 FA Cup defeat after losing 1-2 to Medeama in the finals of this year’s MTN FA Cup.

The Porcupine Warriors having failed to defend their League title could not defend the FA Cup trophy after falling to their counterparts at the Sekondi Essipong Stadium on Sunday.

Midfielder Akwesi Donsu shot Medeama into the lead in the 35th minute after receiving a cross from the right hand side to smash in a low grounder to beat goalkeeper Joseph Addo in post for Kotoko. Kotoko quickly responded with an excellent header from striker Ahmed Toure in the 39th minute.

Kotoko left-winger Eric Donkoh controlled to send in an in-swinger which saw Ahmed Toure rising above his opponent to take a powerful header into the top corner of the post.

Medeama, who had entirely dominated possession in the first half gave themselves another deservedly lead after substitute Bismark Oppong found his way through the Kotoko defense to take a calm finish having received a perfect through pass from Benjamin Bature.

Controversy arose when Richard Mpong’s goal for Kotoko was disallowed by the center referee Joseph Lamptey. Mpong got his head on the ball after Medeama goalkeeper Muntari Tagoe failed to take a one-time catch only for assistant referee 1 David Laryea to spot an infringement in the 18-yard box.

Kotoko however created some few opportunities in the dying embers of the game but failed to find the back of the net. The introduction of Richard Oti and Kwadwo Poku by Coach David Duncan could not make an impact as the Porcupine Warriors failed to defend the trophy won last season. The result thus sees Medeama SC represent Ghana in next year’s CAF Confederations Cup competition.
