Taifa Residents At Risk Over Faulty Transformer

A recent fire incident which burnt supporting electricity poles and left a faulty transformer hanging precariously around Taifa Sports Bar (TSB) and the Taifa Charismatic Baptist Church in the Ga East municipality is putting the lives of residents and passers-by in grave danger.

The situation has left many residents in the area in a state of fear and uncertainty as they cannot predict the fate that awaits them soon.

Today gathered that on 5th June this year, an erected electricity transformer adjacent to TSB, sparked fire causing one of its two supporting electricity poles to catch fire.

The fire burnt the pole and split it into two halves leaving the top parts hanging with the faulty transformer presently being supported by an electricity pole with live electricity cables dangling dangerously.

Thus for three months, the problem has existed which situation was threatening the lives of residents in the area.

A visit to the scene by Today showed that the piece of hanging burnt wood was gradually pulling down the live electricity cables to the ground posing danger to the people in the area.

It was also discovered that the precariously hanging live cables intermittently touched one another which caused sparks of fire.

Residents told this reporter that passers-by and children, especially who are unaware of the situation, were being electrocuted quite often.

According to the residents, frantic efforts made to get authorities at the Accra East (Kwabenya) District of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to attend to the current state of the transformer and the hanging piece of burnt electricity pole has proved futile.

“People run into their rooms and shops anytime the wind blows and the live cables touch one another causing the electrocutions in the area, sometimes, others have to close their shops and go home,” a resident in the area, Ahmed, lamented.

The residents thus threatened that they would soon embark on a massive demonstration against the ECG personnel in the area if the hanging faulty transformer was not properly fixed and the live cables reconnected to prevent death.
