Dead Bodies Cry For Burial

The Police Hospital Mortuary, is said to be bursting at the seams and currently cannot handle any more dead bodies, as it has exceeded its intake by over 100 per cent. The mortuary, which has a holding capacity of 30 bodies, currently has an excess of some 350 corpses. PEACEFMs Akwasi Agyeman, who visited the place to assess at first hand the health implications on residents living near the place said, most of the unidentified dead are armed robbery victims, hit and run victims and other motorable accident victims. Speaking to PEACEFM NEWS, the Hospital Administrator, Dr. Joseph Owusu Bempah, confirmed the report of overcrowded corpses as true. According to him, what has worsened the situation is the lack of a burial site. He explained that initially, the Hospital used to perform mass burial of corpses at Mile 11, in the Weija Municipality, but for sometime now, residents have massed up against the idea of burying corpses there. Anytime we dig up a hole for burial, before daybreaks, some residents would have covered it up, he said. Dr. Owusu Bempah appealed to the government and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), to intervene to avert any health hazard. He stressed however, that if this is not done in the immediate future, the Police will be compelled not to go for any unidentified dead body.
