The shameful action of the police yesterday should be the concern of all well-meaning Ghanaians. The Interior Ministry has not said anything about this mindless brutality of unarmed protesters. I know some people who are politically opposed to the protesters are grinning from ear to ear, gloating over this uncivilised barbarity.

But Martin Luther King Jr. was right: injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Those who are happy today should know that they will not control the coercive machinery of the state always. Tomorrow, they may have a noble cause to fight for in while in the wilderness of opposition. And when that time comes, they will appreciate the importance of a professional and civilised police force. God bless our Homeland Ghana
