The United Progressive Party (UPP) has expressed total support for the call by the largest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other pressure groups for a new electoral roll.
It said the current voters register “has image, integrity and credibility problems and therefore should not be used for the conduct of the 2016 general elections”.
Mr. Razak Kojo Poku, the General Secretary, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi that the party had formally informed the Electoral Commission (EC) about its position.
He said the UPP was convinced that the voters’ register was “bloated” with minors and foreigners having entered their names in it. Cleaning or auditing, to the party, was neither an option nor the best way to deal with the suspicion and mistrust, to make it acceptable to everybody.
Mr. Poku said the way forward was to replace it through the compilation of a refresh one.
Again, the UPP asked that the biometric devices, which were used to capture and record the data of voters’ in year 2012, should be changed as these might have been tampered with.
In the long term, the party proposed electronic voting and adequate resources to the National Identification Authority (NIA) by the government to complete the Ghana Card Project to build a reliable data base.
