The Eastern Regional Youth Organizer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Haruna Apau-Wiredu has released a personal fund of GH¢15,000.00 to register 2,100 residents of the New Juaben North constituency in the Eastern region onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The registration process started on Monday after launching the project at Asokore -Koforidua which was attended by hundreds of residents and some NDC officials.
The exercise, according to the youth leader, is a social intervention programme which was inspired after a survey by his team that many of the residents are lacking the financial strength to register onto the NHIS.
Mr Apau -Wiredu, who contested unopposed in the NDC parliamentary primary in the New Juaben North constituency told the DAILY HERITAGE in an interview that the good health of the citizenry is very critical for nation development and poverty alleviation, hence, his decision to enrol residents onto the Health Insurance Scheme to enable the poor in particular access healthcare free of charge.
"When we talk about development, good healthcare is key; also, good health is key to poverty alleviation, so the importance of improved health conditions of the people cannot be underestimated in human resource development and economic empowerment of the people of New Juaben North."
He added that "even if you are in good health, having health insurance is important. You never know when you or your family member will have an accident or get sick. Having good health insurance provides you with an affordable way to get medical care when you need it with free healthcare."
Mr Apau –Wiredu’s community support projects have been witnessed at Akwadum where he spent over GH¢250, 000.00 to dredge River Bedise and constructed a bridge to aid farmers and traders commute to the town.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Antwi-Bosiako Sekyere, who was at the ceremony, said, President John Dramani Mahama’s NDC led government, is a pro-poor government which has the poor at heart, hence, will roll out policies, programs and projects that would benefit the poor.
He was, therefore, of the conviction that Ghanaians will renew the mandate of the NDC in 2016 to continue to alleviate the poor from poverty.
The Eastern Regional chairman of the NDC, Bismark Tawiah Boateng, called on the electorate in New Juaben North, to change the status quo in 2016 by electing Mr Apaw-Wiredu as Member of Parliament for change in the area since the New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament elected in the area have taken them for a ride.
There were some other dignitaries such as the Council of State member, Nana Kodua Kesse who is also the Oyokohene of the New Juaben Scheme Manager of National Health Insurance Authority, Gyeke Darko and deputy regional secretary, Francis Annor Dompreh.
