Be Steady- Political Scientist Warns EC Boss

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana is the official body in Ghana responsible for all public elections and not a body set up to brief Ghanaians on security details.

A Political Scientist with the University of Ghana, Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko has cautioned the chairperson for the EC, Charlotte Osei to be mindful when discussing the predicaments that disallowed members of the Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) from presenting a petition to her outfit.

On 16th September, 2015, some police officers severely whipped and fired over twenty tear gas canisters at members of the LMVCA for flouting their authority enroute to the EC’s premise to petition the commissioner.

The police have been condemned for meting out such brute force and in an attempt to justify their action; they have explained in series of interviews that they used the strategy to safeguard and protect human lives.

The police described the premise of the EC as a security zone and this was reechoed by the EC boss, Charlotte Osei as she touched on the supposed picketing which failed to come on.

But Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko explains that in a democracy, citizens are allowed to exercise their right in a right way and the way forward for the EC boss is to ensure the will of the people are reflected in all elections.

With the police as an institution in place, the EC chair, according to him, has no right to detail citizens about a security zones.

Touching on such sensitive issues would only make matters worse and build a notion that she is aligned to one political party, the renowned scientist stated.

He therefore tasked her to remain resolute and focus on her mandate instead of meddling in security matters.
