Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the country’s largest private waste management company has been cleared by the World Bank from its list of sanctioned companies eligible to bid for financial projects.
With this, the company is now legally free to bid for contracts funded by or under the jurisdiction of the World Bank.
A Press statement from the World Bank Group Sanctions, signed by its Integrity Compliance Officer, Mr Jonathan Shapiro, said Zoomlion Ghana Limited had satisfied the conditions for it to be released from the bank’s sanctions list.
The statement, dated October 1, 2015, and communicated to the Executive Chairman of Zoomlion Ghana Limited in Accra, said: “Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the now released affiliates are currently (as of September 23, 2015) eligible to bid on and be considered for World Bank Group funded and/or administered projects.”
It said with effect from September 23, 2015, the names of Zoomlion and its affiliates had been removed from the World Bank Group debarment list.
“Should there be any questions regarding Zoomlion’s now released status by anyone either within or outside the Bank, please advise that they should contact me without delay and l will confirm the company’s now eligible status, “the statement said.
How Zoomlion was sanctioned
Robert Coleman, Communication Manager for Zoomlion told Kwami Sefa Kayi host of PeaceFM's "Kokrokoo" in an interview, Monday that in 2013, that the World Bank Group placed a ban on Zoomlion Ghana Limited for two years over alleged bribery in Liberia by one of their employees when the company was bidding for a contract.
“One of our workers engaged in a misconduct and the World Bank thought it was reprehensible and based on that they decided to ban Zoomlion from bidding for any of their financial projects. The misconduct was never sanctioned by the board and management of the zoomlion… but we decided to accept the challenge and move forward and by God’s grace, the sanction has been lifted” he said.
How sanction was revoked
Coleman further explained that “World Bank met with us and indicated exactly what we needed to do and needed to comply with. Whatever happened was also vetted by an independent body and they subsequently submitted their report to the World Bank. After studying the report, they were exceedingly convinced that Zoomlion is credible and therefore the World Bank can do business with us. It is against that background that they decided to revoke the sanction.”
The Communication Manager who was elated could not help but appreciate God and the World Bank for lifting the sanction which to him proves that they are genuine.
"We are exceedingly grateful to the World bank…in life if you have a challenge you must not allow the challenge to weigh you down, you must move ahead to surmount the challenge and that is exactly what we have done. This issue has placed Zoomlion at a better position…today the company is better poised to do business internationally and so we are excited and grateful (to God)," he added.
