The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has been without electricity supply from the national grid for the past two days.
This according to the authorities was as a result of a break in an underground cable that supplies power to the hospital.
The situation has forced the administration to rely on a generator to power only the clinical areas of the hospital, which is the only referral hospital for the three regions in northern Ghana. In an interview with Graphic Online, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the hospital, Hisboa Mohammed said the administrative blocks were without power.
“We are only powering the clinical areas such as the neonatal unit, intensive care unit and maternity wards.
Engineers from the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDco) of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Ghana Grid Company (GRIDco) were working to restore the power but their efforts were being hampered as some developers have constructed buildings on the underground cable.

When contacted, the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the VRA, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim Ababa, said the fault occurred at Lamashegu, a suburb of Tamale behind the Central Medical Stores.
He said someone had put up a building on where the underground cable passed thus causing damages to the cables and thereby making it difficult for the maintenance team to identify the fault.
He said it was an offence for anyone to put up a structure on underground electricity cables and said the VRA would pull down all buildings wrongly cited on underground electricity cables to avert such problems in the future.
