Some bigwigs of the governing National Democratic Congress are demanding the immediate resignation of renowned pathologist, Prof. Agyemang Badu Akosa, as Commissioner at the National Development Planning Commission.
According to the NDC kingpins Prof Akosa, who is also a leading member of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), has forfeited “any legitimate right” to remain with NDC government after marking President John Dramani Mahama a failure.
Reacting to Prof Akosa’s recent interview in which he jabbed the president for “lacking sense of urgency”, a peeved NDC operative told The aL-hAJJ “Akosa cannot remain a member of the Mahama government and at same time running it down…he has lost every legitimacy to remain at post. He must resign honorably or be forced out.”
Prof Akosa, a former Director General of the Ghana Health Service and also a member of the Kwame Nkrumah Centenary Committee, was quoted in the media to have said president Mahama lacked sense of urgency, as far as fixing Ghana’s problems is concerned.
Using the protracted power crisis that has plagued the country for the past three years to buttress his point, the former flagbearer-aspirant of the CPP told host of Kasapa fm’s morning show, Fiifi Banson that the president has failed to show the needed sense of urgency toward solving the problem.
Rating the President’s performance four out of 10, with 10 being the highest score, Prof. Akosa said apart from lacking a sense of urgency, the President has also not been sincere with Ghanaians as far as the energy crisis is concerned.
“There must be a sense of urgency. He has not shown that urgency and he should come and be sincere with the people, especially with the energy issue.” Prof Akosa noted.
This comment has angered some NDC gurus, who have described the renowned pathologist’s comments as disingenuous and “undeserving of someone who was appointed under this government as one of the commissioners for a key state agency like NDPC.” Another NDC capo, who doubles as leading member of United Cadres Front, Felix Efanam Komla Nyaku, also scolded the former Director General of the Ghana Health Service for rating president Mahama so low.
“If Prof. Akosa has any script to mark, he should go and mark the script of his medical students,” he was quoted by The Daily Heritage to have said.
“We are not surprised he rated him that way. This is someone who has not been able to organize his CPP. How could such a person rate someone who has done great work so far? President Mahama as the leader of the NDC has done a great job. He (Prof. Akosa) has always been talking. If he has any markings to do, he should go and mark the scripts of his medical students,” he was reported to have said.
The NDC capo could not fathom why Prof Akosa would rate the president four out of ten when there is evidence of numerous projects and commitment by the president to solve the energy crisis he inherited from previous administrations.
This is not the first time Prof Akosa is thought to have betrayed the government that has offered him opportunity to serve.
Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, not long ago, was reported to have told the media that the NDPC was so broke that the commission cannot carry out its statutory mandate of policy formulating.
He told Citi News “there is no money to do anything. Why people get up and even come to work, only God knows. The NDPC is doing pretty much a lot of work on nothing”.
“I have said that by the year 2035, the country’s population will be 48 million. Who is sitting there today planning how that population will impact on this country? Nobody! Since the beginning of the year, they’ve [NDPC] had only first quarter tranche of funding. I am a commissioner and I can say this on authority”.
He added that it is saddening that the Mahama led administration is not attaching importance to the work of the NDPC saying “it’s got to be resourced that even if this country has only got GHC1,000, maybe GHC 500 of that GHC1, 000 should be given to NDPC”.
This statement angered many government officials and supporters who at that time felt Prof. Akosa had betrayed the president and the government.
