Two Doctors Plead For Salaries

Two junior medical officers who work with the Upper West Regional Hospital in Wa have appealed to the government to pay them their accumulated salaries.

“We are pleading with the government to release our salaries which have not been paid for the past six months,” they said.

The two medical officers, Dr Joel Djangmah Akwetey and Dr Frank Akwasi Appiagyei, started work in May after completeing their medical course at the University of Ghana, Legon.

Allowances

The two, who work with three senior medical officers, including an eye specialist, are mostly on duty day and night because of the high volume of work at the hospital, which also serves as a referral station.

According to them, they have been expecting the government to pay them since they started work in May but until now, they have been receiving only meagre allowances from the hospital, which is inadequate to cater for themselves and their families.

They said their patience had run out and that if the government failed to pay them immediately, they would advise themselves.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic last Sunday, Dr Akwetey said they wanted the whole six months’ pay in full. “We will not accept any piece-meal payment. We are not asking for any special treatment,” they said.
