Waste management company Zoomlion has condemned Ghanaians' attitude towards sanitation saying it is the reason why rains which ordinarily are a blessing, have become a threat.

“People are simply reckless and careless when it comes to sanitation and that is the fundamental problem that we have,” an obviously frustrated Communications Manager Robert Coleman told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Wednesday.

The Communications Manager says some countries hail the coming of the rainy season because it ensures a good planting and harvesting season.

Even when it floods in other countries “all that you see [is] water”

But in Ghana, even with negligible volumes of rainfall, cities get flooded and “all you see is garbage”, the worried Zoomlion official observed.

According to Robert Coleman, although Zoomlion has sanitation workers well distributed across the metropolis, collecting filth is still a huge challenge.

Despite processing 400 tonnes of waste daily, floods still expose the city as dirty and filthy.

Robert Coleman finds it shocking that people still use the drains meant to carry liquid waste as receptacles for waste.

According to him, despite dredging attempts, people see the rains as an opportunity to dump waste in gutters.

The manager believes that without enforcing the bye-laws on sanitation, very little will change in the culture of Ghanaians towards sanitation.

“Bye-laws must not only bark but they must bite,” he emphasized.

He has noticed, much to his chagrin, that in Ghana, “nobody cares”.
