New Voters Register Is Useless Without Mechanism To Prevent Minors... - Kofi Adams

National Organizer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams says the Electoral Commission’s public forum on the current voters’ register has exposed the lies of the opposition NPP and its Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.

According to him, the NPP and Nana Akufo-Addo lied to Ghanaians and the world that all political parties and civil society groups are canvassing for a new compilation of the voters’ register for the 2016 elections.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Kofi Adams stressed that the outcome of the EC’s forum clearly shows that save three political parties including the NPP, every civil society group and other major political parties are for the current voters’ register being maintained.

As far as the NDC is concerned, Kofi Adams says, it was clear that the comments before, during and after the forum were conviction to the fact that the register only need mechanisms which will prevent minors and foreigners from registering to vote and not a total overhaul of the register.

To him, the position of the NDC has always been that electoral offenders should be punished; thus when it becomes evidential that foreigners and minors have found their names in the register, the existing law should be used to expunge their names from the voters’ register.

In the situation we find ourselves, it will be useless to call for a new register when there is no mechanism to stop minors and foreigners from taking part in any form of registration; we will face the same challenge if we decide to compile a new voters’ register,” Kofi Adams charged.
