Robber Snatches Cop�s Taxi

A 28-year-old driver has been arrested by the Tema Regional police for allegedly snatching a taxi belonging to a police officer at gunpoint.

The police commenced investigation into the incident and the suspect was arrested by the Ashaiman police upon a tip-off after he had changed the number plate of the car, which belongs to Detective Corporal Joseph Mensah of Community 1 District Police, Tema.

The suspect, Alex Ampong, was said to have hired the services of the driver of the Toyota Corolla saloon car with registration number GT 4488-15, valued at GH¢29,000, from Community 1 to Tema Harbour area, close to GHACEM, on October 18, 2015.

The source said Ampong then asked the driver to stop the vehicle for his friend to get on board along the Fishing Harbour road.

Immediately the driver stopped the vehicle, the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and ordered him to step out of the car.

The police later got hint of the act and went to a car sprayer’s shop at Ashaiman where reports indicated Alex Ampong had taken the vehicle for spraying. On reaching there, the police saw a Nissan Almera being sprayed and so they seized it thinking that was the snatched taxi.

A witness in the case detected that the insurance sticker was fake.

On October 24, 2015 at about 6:00 pm, the suspect showed up at the spraying shop in a Toyota Corolla with registration number GT 5894-15 and he was arrested by the police.

Police inspected the car and detected that the insurance sticker had GT 4488-15, which was different from the registration number – GT 5894-15.

The suspect, who was interrogated by the police, admitted snatching the car from the driver at gunpoint around the Tema Harbour area.
