Rice Farmers In Dire Need Of Destoner

Rice farmers at Ohiamadwen and surrounding villages within the Shama District of the Western Region, are in dire need of destoner and other agricultural inputs to enable them produce quality rice.

Mr. Moses Duanyewotor, one of the farmers who spoke to the Ghana News Agency, said the group which could produce more than 400 metric tonnes of rice were not able to meet targets, due to the lack of ploughs, tillers, drying equipment and irrigation facilities.

He was not happy about the distribution of fertilizers and seedlings for planting by Agricultural officials.

Mr Frank Yeboah, Assistant Director of Administration, said the Assembly saw rice production as key food security contributor, and that it would continue to support farmers with resources.

He said rice cultivation played a central role in the medium-term development plan of the Assembly, and that farmers would be encouraged to repay the various intervention packages for others to also benefit."
