Ghana To Soon Get A National Policy On Volunteerism

Mr Kodwo Morgan, Chairman of a 14-member Volunteer Infrastructure-National Planning Committee (VI-NVP) has urged the media to help in raising the spirit of volunteerism in the country.

Speaking at a Media Engagement for Volunteer Infrastructure in the country on Tuesday, Mr Morgan said there is the need to make the ‘V’ (Volunteerism) stand out in headlines “so that people will know and recognize its importance”.

According to him, so many volunteers across the country have been contributing immensely towards the reduction of different kinds of development challenges in communities and supporting the overall development efforts of government.

In view of this, the VI-NPV Chairman said “the media must help in projecting the activities of these volunteers”, adding that very soon the country will have a policy on volunteerism and it is the media that will help in such a campaign.

Last year (29th July, 2014), a 14-member VI-NPC was formed with representation from Government UNV and CSOs by the Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur to initiate and implement the processes needed to make volunteerism a policy in the country.

So far, Ghana has no law or policy that specifically addresses volunteerism in a comprehensive manner and according to Mr Morgan the committee has already come up with a draft policy which has been submitted to Nana Oye Lithur.

“The committee has come up with a draft policy and the next stage is to have stakeholders workshop, go through the draft policy again…we will then come up with a second draft and subsequently, it will go to parliament….that is why we need the media to make the campaign effective” he added.
