Ghana and Lorient striker Majeed Waris has apologised for his dramatic kung fu-style kick during a Ligue 1 clash with Guingamp over the weekend. Waris, 24, was given the  marching orders after kicking Jimmy Briand in the 43rd minute of the game.

The Ghana forward had an automatic ban extended to six matches for the incident and for kicking water bottles as he stormed off the field. “It was a crazy moment and I acted unprofessionally,” the 24-year-old Black Star told BBC Sport. “I apologise to everyone and hope to return both stronger and wiser.”

Waris added: “In hindsight I couldn’t believe what I’d done because I have never been so angry in my life or reacted so badly. “No matter what I say I now, I simply cannot justify my actions but I will definitely learn from my mistakes.” Waris, who has scored three league goals since joining Lorient in the summer from Trabzonspor, was enraged by a tackle from winger Briand that went unpunished by the referee during the 2-2 draw.

He reacted by launching a kick at his opponent, which resulted in the Ghanaian receiving a straight red card. “Yes I was unhappy about his foul on me but I should not have retaliated. It was the wrong thing to do,” Waris said.
