NPP Chairman Escapes Attack

Credible reports available to The General Telegraph indicate that the Odododiodio constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Raymond Tetteh was this week rescued by police from mob attack by angry party supporters.

Mr Raymond Tetteh, a constituency chairman was reported to have angered the party supporters with remarks criticising the party leadership for the way and the manner Mr Paul Afoko, the suspended national chairman is being treated by the leadership.

Our sources claim that the angry party supporters are loyalists of NPP presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The chairman, who was alerted by informants, had to seek refuge at the James Town Police station to avoid him being lynched.

According to the reports, an emergency constituency executive committee, which was requested by the party’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency was in progress when the attackers closed in on him. Mr Tetteh confirmed the story when contacted by The General Telegraph but declined to give details.

He said he has not only reported the matter to the police but also to the party’s National Council. “Oooh… it happened alright, but I thank God that nothing happened to me. I have notified the National Council and they will look into the case.”

Asked why he was under attack, he remarked, “I really don’t know. The attackers have to explain,” he said.

“Actually it was the Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency who requested the meeting. I don’t know what he wanted to discuss with us. We were about to start when they came to attack me,” the constituency Chairman said.

The attempted attack comes in the wake of the recent murder of Abubakar Saddick, a member of the party at Asawase constituency in the Ashanti Region.

Abubakar Saddiq, 37 years, was a spare parts dealer at Suame Magazine but stayed at Zaabo Zongo a suburb of Asawase. Though it is unclear why he was killed, reports suggest that Abubakar Saddiq and others had threatened to beat up the constituency chairman for making some comments against the party’s flag bearer, Nana Addo.

The chairman, Brenya has also been accused of transporting people to picket at the party’s head office in Accra over the suspension of NPP’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko.

The police have arrested a number of party members over the murder of the party member.
