First Phase of Govt's "Free SHS" Begins; Over 300,000 Students' Fees Freely Paid - Fin. Minister

Finance Minister, Seth Tekper has reiterated government's commitment to providing free education to Ghanaians.

According to the Finance Minister, the Mahama administration has from this year absorb the school fees for 320488 students in the country.

Delivering the 2016 budget before Parliament on Friday, Mr. Tekper said the Government of Ghana is "on course to fulfill our promise to construct 200 community day Senior High Schools to improve access and equity in secondary education in under-served districts.

The goal of government is to transform the quality of education throughout the country. In pursuit of that goal, the President promised to make secondary education progressively free from 2015/2016. We are happy to inform this house that funding was provided to absorb specific fees for the first term of 2015/2016 academic year for 320488 day students in public Senior High Schools.

"...the commitment will be sustained into 2016. Mr. Speaker, following the relative success of primary school projects," he noted.
