More Than 183,000 NDC Delegates To Vote In Eastern Region

More than 183,000 members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are to vote in the Eastern Regional parliamentary primaries in 33 constituencies on November 21.

They are expected to cast their votes in 1,776 polling stations across to endorse the parliamentary aspirants as well as the party’s Flag bearer President John Mahama with the yes or no symbols on the ballot paper.

Briefing the GNA, the Regional Assistant Secretary of the party, Mr Francis Annor-Dompreh said all logistics, materials and arrangement for the smooth running of the elections have been provided and therefore expects an incidence-free exercise on Saturday.

He said the party had identified some flash points at the keenly contested constituencies where the incumbents are involved such as Akwatia, Lower-Manya, Yilo Krobo, and Upper-West Akyem but has taken security measures to contain any untoward situation.

In all 78 aspirants, are vying for the 33 seats in the region and they include nine women comprising the Deputy Regional Minister, Ms Mavis Frimpong, five Municipal and District Chief Executives, (MMDCEs) and seven incumbent members including a Deputy Minister, Mr Baba Jamal Mohamed.

The race from all indications would be hot in the NDC strongholds such as Akwatia where Mr Babal Jamal is being fiercely contested by one candidate and Lower Manya where Mr Jeff Tetteh-Kavianu, the incumbent is being contested by three other persons.

Upper-Manya constituency is also another hotspot with Mr Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, incumbent and former Deputy Minister of Defence is being contested by three people including a former District Chief Executive and a medical doctor who happens to be the Volta Regional Director of Health.

On the women’s front, it’s highly tipped that five out of the nine women including Ms Frimpong who is going unopposed would sail through.

Meanwhile, Dr Kofi Agyarko-Danquah, a nominee for the Fanteakwa South constituency has been suspended, indicating that his only contestant who happens to be a woman, Ms Elorm Mensah would go solo.
