Ghana was ranked the seventh out of 54 African Countries on the 2015 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG).

Ghana scored 67.3 per cent, a downward change of -0.4 per cent since 2011 as against Mauritius’s 77.5 per cent, an upward change of +0.3 per cent since 2011.

The IIAG is an annual assessment of the quality of governance in African countries, compiled by combining over 93 indicators from 33 independent African and global data institutions.

The index report launched last Month provides a framework for citizens, governments, institutions and the private sector to assess accurately the delivery of public goods and services, and policy outcomes, across the continent.

Ghana also was among the top five countries that scored higher marks in Participation and Human Rights. It scores 76.1 per cent and it was also among the countries with the highest sub-category scores.

Mauritius, Cape Verde, Botswana, South Africa and Namibia were the top five highest overall scorers of the four categories.

The categories are Safety and Rule of Law, Participation and Human Rights, Sustainable Economic Opportunity, and Human Development.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Abdoulie Janneh, Executive Director of Mo Ibrahim Foundation, said IIAG is both a tool to help determine and debate government performance and a decision-making instrument with which to govern.

He said it is the most comprehensive collection of data on African governance, which every African journalist should be interested in.

He noted the 2015 IIAG was calculated using data 33 external data institutions, which provided 93 indicators aggregated into 14 sub-categories, four categories and one overall measurement of governance performance.

The media event was to announce the 2015 annual Governance Weekend, the flagship event of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, held every year in mid-November in a different African country’s capital city.

This year’s event will be in Accra from tomorrow, November 20 to Sunday, November 22 and all the events will be streamed live on the internet. The Leadership Ceremony would also broadcast live on television across the continent and the rest of the world.
