Prez Mahama To Lay Off Workers Bawumia Exposes

The Vice Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu has indicated that the ruling government will be laying off workers per the IMF conditionalities.

According to him, “government has committed under the IMF programme to lay off workers but they will not admit it if you ask them”

Government in 2014 went to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a possible bailout following depreciation of the cedi, high rate of inflation and other economic challenges.

After government completed negotiations this year (2015) and a release of $918 million was made to Ghana, reports were rife that government was going to lay off workers as part of the IMF conditionalities.

However, they (government) denied those reports.

But speaking at a press conference, Wednesday 2nd December, 2015, on the NPP’s position on the, 2016 budget statement, Dr. Bawumia asked the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be transparent as far as plans to rationalize civil service workers are concerned.

“The fact, however, is that one of the conditionalities of the IMF programme is a commitment to this government to rationalize the size of the Civil Service. We are therefore asking that the plan for the rationalisation of the civil service be made public by both the government and the IMF in the spirit of transparency and accountability. They should put it out in the public domain so that everybody will know what they have committed to.”
