Police Sergeant granted bail for defilement

A 42-year-old police sergeant was on Monday granted a GH10,000 bail with two sureties by a Kumasi Circuit Court for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old Junior High School One pupil. Sergeant Simons Asabre, a member of the Ghana Police Band in Kumasi, pleaded not guilty to the charge of defiling a colleagues daughter, and will re-appear before the Court on September 23, 2009. Police Chief Inspector Mary Nana Adwoa Affanyi told the Court presided over by Mr. Adjei Frimpong that for a number of months, the policeman had been defiling the girl, who lived with her parents at the Central Police Barracks. She said the stoutly built Sergeant threatened to beat the girl last two weeks when she refused to sleep with him on this occasion. Afraid of the threats, the victim informed her parents. A formal complaint was subsequently made to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police Service leading to his arrest. After interrogation he was put before Court and remanded till Monday, September 7, 2009, when he was granted bail.
