UK Police Probe Pastors Wife Death

It appears the battle over the death of Ms. Charmaine Speirs, wife of United Kingdom      (UK)-based Ghanaian pastor, Eric Isaiah Adusah, has not yet ended.

Ghana’s Attorney General, (AG) Mrs. Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, had earlier dropped the murder charges against the accused person, leading to Pastor Adusah being discharged by a court of law.

However, the United Kingdom police have begun investigations into the death of Ms. Speirs, 41.

Pastor Adusah, pastor of the Global Light Revival Ministries, was being tried over the death of Ms. Speirs, which occurred between 18th and 20th March, 2015, at Mac Dic Royal Plaza Hotel in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

Charged with murder, the man of God was discharged eight months into the committal trial after state prosecutors said there was no evidence to link him to the death.

The AG had in an earlier advice on the case dated May 3, 2015 said “…As already stated, even though we find some aspects of his behaviour suspicious, we cannot at this stage have sufficient evidence to hold him liable for the death of the deceased.”

It added, “We therefore advise that he is granted bail; he should however, continue to assist the police in conducting further investigations into the case.”

Already, an autopsy report on the deceased from the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital dated March 31, 2015 signed by Dr. Afua Darkwah Abrahams, indicated that the pastor’s wife died of “acute poisoning and opiate heroin” overdose, a banned narcotic substance.

But the Essex police in the UK, who have in their custody the report, claim they had carried out their own post mortem examination.

Sources say the family of Ms. Speirs asserts that the decision to start an investigation in the UK was taken after the murder case against Pastor Adusah had collapsed.

It said Ms. Speirs’ mother, Linda Speirs, who had not seen the full autopsy report from Ghana, hoped to finally learn about the circumstances behind her daughter’s death.

She is quoted as having said, “I’m very glad that her body is back in Britain. I even had my doubts that would happen. The results of this new autopsy won’t be known for a while and I still have no idea when I’ll be able to bury her.

“It’s been a long, long wait for us to be able to bury Charmaine but at least this delay is for a good purpose.”

Ms. Speirs was found dead in a bathtub at the Mac Dic Royal Plaza Hotel where the couple had stayed when they visited Ghana for a programme.

The body of the pastor’s wife was discovered days after the husband had checked out and traveled to the UK in the early hours of March 18, 2015, while the deceased was billed to check out on March 20, 2015.
