Sagnarigu District honours 20 farmers

The Sagnarigu District Assembly on Saturday honoured 20 farmers for their contribution to food security in the district as part of the 31st National Farmers’ Day celebrations.

The celebrations, which were in various categories including rice, maize, cowpea, saw the winners receive packages such as bicycles, knapsack sprayers, roofing sheets, bags of fertilizer, wellington boots, cutlasses and sacks.

Mr Aminu Fuseini, who cultivated 14 acres of rice, 30 acres of maize and 40 acres of soybean, was adjudged District Best Farmer and he received a tricycle, a knapsack sprayer, six roofing sheets, bags of fertilizer, a wellington boot, and cutlasses.

The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly also honoured 19 farmers with various prizes including motorbikes, wellington boots, cutlasses, and bags of fertilizer.

Mr Abukari Lansah, who was adjudged Metropolitan Chief Farmer, received a motorbike, a wellington boots, five cutlasses, and bags of fertilizer, a half-piece cloth and lantern.

This year’s National Farmers’ Day celebration was on the theme: “Transform Ghana: Invest in Agriculture”.

Mr Alhassan Mohammed Sorogudoo, District Chief Executive of Sagnarigu, who handed the awards to the winners at Bogkurugu, a community in the District, said government would continue to play its roles to improve agricultural production.

He said the district assembly was working to address the concerns of all communities in the district saying all communities would receive their fair share of the national cake.

Mr Baba Sualihu, Director of the Department of Agriculture at the Sagnarigu District, expressed the need to invest in agriculture to mechanize and modernize the sector for increased food production.
