Tariff Increment Is Unfortunate - NDC Dep. Gen. Sec.

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Lawson says the utility price increment announced by the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) is “unfortunate”.

He argued that the increment will rather burden Ghanaians instead of its intended target of enhancing effective operations by the Utility Service Providers.

Already there is crisis in the energy sector,” he told Kwasi Aboagye, host of 'Ghana Montie'.

NDC’s George Lawson strongly indicated on NEAT FM’s morning show 'Ghana Montie' that he is "not in support" of the increment after calling on the PURC to revise their decision.

The PURC announced electricity tariffs will be increased by 59.2 %, while that of water will go up by 67.2 % for residential consumers. The changes will take effect from December 14, 2015.

The Director of Public Affairs at the PURC, Nana Yaa Jantuah who announced the tariff hike said - “As we grow in generation demands, and add more thermal plants, cost also increases.”

The increment is coming amidst a protracted energy crisis christened “Dumsor”, a difficulty Ghanaians have endured for over four years, together with perennial water shortages in many communities of the country.
