Tariff Increment Okay But - Wereko-Brobby

Former Volta River Authority (VRA) boss, Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby says the utility price increment announced by the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) is 'okay' but 'the timing is wrong.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has increased electricity and water tariffs by 59.2% and 67.2% respectively. The changes will take effect from December 14, 2015.

The commission announced that changes are expected to take effect from December 14, 2015.

Speaking to Kwami Sefa Kayi in an interview, Wednesday, Wereko-Brobby said even though the increment is justifiable, PURC should have waited until after the power crisis improves.

"The percentage is okay but the timing is wrong; because there is still ongoing power crisis. Once they have promised us that very soon the dumsor will end, they should have waited for the dumsor to really end and for people to see that they are enjoying the services they are paying for before any increment can be done. They keep telling us that the increment will bring improvement in utility services but nothing happens; it only gets worse," he indicated.
