A 28-year old Intelligence Officer of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service, who was shot last Sunday in an attempt to arrest an armed robber, is responding to treatment. The security officer, whose name is being withheld, sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds in the right arm and cheeks on Sunday September 6 2009, at Mallam in the Ga South District of the Greater Accra region, during a police operation to arrest armed robber, Abubakar Adams. Adams, a 22-year-old suspected armed robber, described as a terrorist whose bullets hit the police officer and four others, is said to have been on the police wanted list for the past two years. Narrating the incident to DAILY GUIDE, the Odorkor District Commander, Superintendent Ebenezer Asare, said Abubarkar Adams aka bubak , Alhassan Bawah , and three others managed to rob a businessman of a video game machine worth GH 27million and cash totalling GH24million in 2007. He said other complainants have also reported similar robbery cases involving the gang, led by Abubakar Adams, within Mallam and its environs. We managed to arrest Alhassan Bawah in the process but could not get the four others, Supt. Asare told DAILY GUIDE. The District Commander revealed that after all attempts to bring the rest of the gang to book failed; the Odorkor police then sought the assistance of the intelligence unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to help apprehend the rest of the suspected armed robbers. Supt. Asare said following this collaboration, the police intelligence team, on Sunday September 6 around 6pm, spotted Abubakar Adams in a public bathhouse, where he was apprehended. Abubakar Adams then attempted to disarm one of the armed police personnel but the intelligence officer intercepted and in the process the gun fired and hit him in the cheeks and right arm, Supt. Asare disclosed, adding The police however managed to arrest Abubakar Adams. The two armed robbers are now in police custody whilst the police officer, who was rushed to the Korle-Bu teaching hospital, is responding to treatment. Earlier in the day, the Director General CID, DCOP Frank Adu-Poku, visited the police officer at the Korle-Bu hospital. Speaking to the paper, the CID Boss noted that, as a father-figure it is his responsibility to be concerned about personnel who are injured in the course of duty. I thank God for saving his life and I am particularly impressed about his condition now as I was informed his condition was critical last Sunday, DCOP Adu-Poku noted. He urged the public to bear with the police and to continue to support them in the discharge of their duty. DCOP Adu-Poku gave the assurance that the police administration would continue to help curb the activities of armed robbers in the country.
