Nana Addo Storms Amenfi West

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will arrive in Asankrangwa in the Amenfi West Constituency of the Western Region today ahead of Tuesday’s by-election in the area.

The Electoral Commission has set December 15, 2015 for the by-election which has become necessary following the demise of John Gyetuah, the area’s former MP.

The constituency has already seen intense political activities as high ranking government officials, including the Vice President, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, have stormed the area to campaign for their candidate.

Ahead of the election, allegations of vote-buying have taken over the air, with the NDC being accused of dishing out goodies including fertilizer.

The NPP and the NDC have Paul Dekyi, a legal practitioner, and Eric Afful, an active member of the party, as their respective candidates.

Some NPP gurus, including Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s running mate for the 2016 elections, have also visited the town ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested parliamentary election.

The NPP flagbearer, together with the Acting Chairman of the party, Freddie Blay, as well as other NPP national executives will join the family of the late MP for the funeral rites today.

Nana Akufo-Addo will also address a mammoth rally in the constituency on Sunday to crown the party’s campaign for the by-election on Tuesday.

Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed, Western Regional Organiser of the NPP, who disclosed this, stressed that the NPP must win the by-election to send a strong signal to the rest of Ghanaians on the need for change of government in 2016.

According to him, though the Amenfi West seat had long been occupied by the ruling NDC for 12 years, there is a chance for the NPP to win it because the people of Amenfi West are tired of the bad governance of the NDC.

“The NDC has taken the people for granted and thus has denied the people projects which will enhance farming activities in the area,” he pointed out.

He revealed that due to the by-election, the NDC had started some road projects in areas where they were not needed whereas the cocoa growing areas had been neglected.

“The people are fed up with the NDC government because after voting for the party for many years, they could only boast of the projects which were done by Kufuor’s administration,” he asserted.

He stated, “though the by-election will be tough, the NPP will win because the people of Amenfi West will weigh their living conditions on a scale to determine whether the NDC deserves to continue or there should be a change of government.”

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has indicated that all is set for the by-election on Tuesday.

Stephen Opoku Mensah, Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, mentioned that the requisite materials were all ready and that the notice of poll had been posted in the various communities.

“The officials to assist have been given the needed training and we are just waiting for Tuesday for the polls and we hope to have a peaceful election,” he added.
