NPP Suspends Ambassador George Kumi

The Sunyani East constituency of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Brong Ahafo region has suspended failed parliamentary candidate, Ambassador George Kumi.

This follows a petition challenging his membership after declaring his intention to contest the 2016 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate. The petitioners led by Maxwell Mahama, a communication officer of the NPP in the constituency said, the decision by the former Ambassador is in contravention to Article 4, Clause 7 of the party’s Constitution.

Ambassador George Kumi lost the NPP primaries in June to incumbent Member of Parliament for Sunyani East, Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh. After ordering a recount and seeking legal redress, the ambassador to Libya and Nigeria under the erstwhile Kufuor administration lost to the incumbent.

Feeling cheated, he with the blessing of his supporters decided to go independent to retain the seat for the NPP in the 2016 elections. But his conduct according to the petitioners will rather negatively affect the electoral fortunes of the party in next year’s elections.

Apart from Ambassador Kumi, 16 others have also been suspended for supporting the decision of the parliamentary hopeful.
