Probe AMERI Deal - Tarzan

Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby a former Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority has proposed a thorough investigation into the controversial AMERI deal in which Ghana is paying US$510 million for ten gas generators aimed at reducing the biting effect of the four-year old dumsor which has crippled many businesses.

Dr Wereko-Brobby, popularly known as Tarzan, says suggestions that the actual deal is worth US$350 million raises serious questions which need to be answered.

Speaking to Joy News yesterday, the former VRA boss said “I think if we can establish that the offer on the table was actually 350 million Dollars, then we need to ask the question, how did 350 million turn into 510 million?”

His comments follow revelation that a sub-contractor in the controversial AMERI deal, METKA, which was hired to deliver 10 gas turbines to Ghana to ameliorate the power crisis is taking 350 million dollars from the 510 million dollars contract.

There are concerns about who takes the remaining 160 million dollars from the contract sum of 510 million dollars if METKA has been allocated 350 million dollars.

The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has also heavily criticised the deal. Deputy Director of the Centre, Benjamin Boakye believes the US$160 million goes to the AMERI Group which is playing the middle man's role. He said that is unacceptable.

Tarzan agrees the AMERI group which is playing a middle man's role cannot be paid US$160 and is reported to have suggested that contract lawyers and Energy professionals must be sought to look thoroughly into the contract.

"There is a disparity and we need to establish the fact," he said.
