Students at Talawona prefer fishing to education

Mr Ibrahim Abdulai, a teacher at Kandeu Basic School has alleged that students of Talawona Primary prefer fishing to education.

He therefore questioned the usefulness of a six- unit classroom block the Wa West District Assembly plans to construct for the school.

Mr Abdulai who made the allegation during a Public Accountability Forum organised by the District Assembly at the forecourt of the Wechiau Naa’s Palace said the school would be closed if something is not done about the current dropout rate.

He appealed to the Assembly to sensitise the people to understand the importance of education, before committing resources to put up a classroom block, which would eventually become a “white elephant”.

Jorbontey Joseph, Assemblyman for Tokali Electoral Area and a native of Talowona refuted the allegation saying it is not true that students from the village prefer fishing to education.

Mr Premus Baro, Assistant Director in charge of Supervision said school projects are not awarded haphazardly but base on request from community members and an assessment of enrolment figures.

Naa Bandanaa Chielinah, Chief of Meteu criticised the Assembly for constructing a basketball and volleyball pitches at Wechiau instead of a community centre, which would have been more useful and beneficial to the community.

Mr Adamu Dasaana, District Chief Executive (DCE) said the operational service delivery standards of the Assembly include professionalism, participation, client focus, transparency, accountability as well as effective and efficient use of resources.

He said the Assembly has delivered on a number of projects to make life better for the people and called for their continued cooperation to facilitate the delivery of amenities.

The DCE said the Assembly has not fared well in internally generated funds as it was only able to raise GH₵ 70,445.17 at the end of the third quarter of the year representing 46 per cent estimated revenue for 2015.
