The decision by Government to build teaching hospitals all over the country would not only help in the provision of quality health care, but would also halt instances whereby junior doctors refused posting to perceived smaller hospitals.

Mr Alex Segbefia, Minister of Health, noted that a lot of the junior doctors, especially those doing their houseman-ship preferred to be sent to bigger or teaching hospitals, because they were perceived to be specialist hospitals where one could learn more and boost chances of specalising.

Speaking after visiting the Mamprobi Polyclinic and the Marie Louise Children’s Hospital in Accra, Mr Segbefia noted that next year the Legon Hospital, which had been targeted to become a teaching hospital and a Military Hospital to be built in Kumasi would all come on board.

He said all these were initiatives by Government to ensure that Ghanaians did not only get quality healthcare, but also for the hospitals to serve as specialist hospitals to teach and nurture young doctors.

On the impasse between the staff of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, the Minister said he had been formally notified and would investigate and respond appropriately.

He proposed the establishment of a common oxygen centre to supply oxygen to both government and private hospitals in Accra on commercial basis to ease instances whereby some hospitals run out of it.

The Minister commended the Mamprobi Polyclinic for recording zero maternal death within the past two years and urged them to continue with the good works.

He expressed his appreciation about the cordial relationship that existed between mothers who visited the Mamprobi Polyclinic and the nurses, citing it as one of the main reasons for recording zero maternal deaths in the past two years.

The Health Minister cited lack of infrastructure as the main challenge facing the two hospitals and expressed his readiness to dialogue with the Ghana Health Service on how best to address the issue.
