Breast Care International (BCI), the country’s leading anti-breast campaigner, has projected Ghana into becoming the African regional hub for breast cancer education and treatment.

According to BCI, breast cancer awareness among the populace was on the ascendency, resulting in early reporting of cases for early treatment.

“Our projection and mission statement is to significantly reduce the incidence of the condition, and make Ghana the African hub for the education and treatment of breast cancer,” the organisation said in its end- of- year message.

Although significant gains were made in the year in awareness creation and the treatment of survivors, BCI, which collaborates with Peace & Love Hospitals, said challenges remained.

“This has been the year that was characterised by increased patronage of our awareness creation programmess on one breadth, while illiteracy, ignorance and poverty conspired to keep a marginal percentage of the populace from accessing our free screening programmes.

“These constraints, notwithstanding, we celebrate the achievements made in our collective efforts to fight breast cancer,” it said.

Dr. (Mrs) Beatrice Wiafe-Addai, president of BCI, noted that in collaboration with partner institutions the group successfully organised the fourth national annual breast cancer walk for cure in Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region, which attracted a recorded participation of about 40,000 people.

“The 2015 Walk for the Cure, highlighted our countrywide drive of creating awareness and disseminating information on breast cancer.

“We credit our success to corporate Ghana, the hardworking staff of the two institutions, heads of institutions, traditional leaders and queen mothers, market women and sponsors for the support and cooperation that had led to the successes,” she said.

She expressed the institutions’ renewed commitment to “resolutely stand by the women of Ghana”, indicating that “their health is our priority, a premium we will never compromise on.”
