A twenty-one year old video operator who appeared before a Kumasi Circuit Court accused of robbery, has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. Akwasi Acheampong pleaded guilty. The Court chaired by Mr Adjei Frimpong heard that both the convict and the victim, Anyine Aduku, are residents of Kumasi. On September, 4, at about 2300 hours, Aduku joined Acheampong and two other persons, now at large, in a taxi cab with registration number GT 6031 U at Nima-Moke, a suburb of Kumasi. Unknown to Aduku, he was in the midst of an armed robbery gang. Half-way through the journey, one of them held the taxi driver by the neck while Acheampong drew a screw driver and ordered him to surrender the money he had on him, but he refused. Aduku was stabbed several times in the thigh and bled profusely. Acheampong and his gang succeeded in robbing him of GH�370 in a wallet, a Samsung mobile phone and gold necklace, after which they pushed him out of the cab and sped off. The victim managed to get on another taxi cab, whose driver volunteered to give the robbers a hot chase, forcing them to run into a ditch. People who were attracted to the scene arrested Acheampong but his accomplices escaped. A search conducted on the convict by the police uncovered the screw driver and he admitted the offence in his caution statement.
